CURRENT HAPPENINGS
It's Summer!
First harvest this year is May 29th. Greenleaf and Red Boston with Redleaf and Romaine right on their heels. Also coming in June to a favorite food co-op or food retailer near you; broccoli, cucumbers, escarole and radicchio, and our signature kales - lacinato, red and green.
Exciting changes for 2009 at Gardens of Eagan include:
- Construction of hoop houses for season extension - done and planted with peppers, basil and berries.
- Adding several crops into our rotation. How about edamame, radicchio, basil and more? - done, all planted and growing for your culinary pleasure!
- Continuing soil balancing with calcium and boron - done! (And don't forget that heapin' helping of rich turkey compost and fall planted cover crops turned back into to the soil, the Gardens of Eagan traditional spring diet for our soil microbes.)
- Research underseeding kale with nitrogen fixing cover crops.
- Expanding pollen and nectar sources for beneficial insects, and native pollinators. We will explore working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the first-ever national initiative to fund such projects.
- Attracting creative and enthusiastic people to our already-talented team.
- Developing educational programming for the Organic Field School - our non-profit partner. Join us for two remaining farmer training sessions, one in June and one in July. Go to the Land Stewardship website for more information.
